M3U vs Xtream Codes
Two ways to log in to the same IPTV account. Here is which one to pick, and why.
The quick answer: Use Xtream Codes whenever your player supports it (TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, most Android and Firestick players). It loads faster, fills in the TV guide and catch-up automatically, and keeps your password out of a long link. Use the M3U link for players that only accept a playlist URL, such as VLC, Kodi’s PVR IPTV Simple Client, MyIPTV Player on Xbox and many smart TV apps. Both give access to the same channels on the same account.
M3U vs Xtream Codes: What Is the Difference?
An M3U link is a web address that downloads a text playlist: one line per channel with its name, logo, group and stream address. The player reads the whole file every time it refreshes.
Xtream Codes is a login made of three parts: a server URL, a username and a password. The player talks to the provider’s server and asks only for what it needs (categories, channels, TV guide, movies and series), which is why it is usually faster.
On most provider panels, both point to the same account. The M3U link is usually built from the Xtream details:
http://SERVER:PORT/get.php?username=USER&password=PASS&type=m3u_plus&output=ts
So if you have one, you can usually get the other. Ask your provider to confirm the exact format.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| M3U playlist | Xtream Codes | |
|---|---|---|
| What you enter | One long URL | Server URL + username + password |
| Channel loading | Downloads the full list each refresh; slower on large lists | Loads categories on demand; usually faster |
| TV guide (EPG) | Separate EPG URL often needed | Loaded automatically in most players |
| Catch-up / replay | Depends on player and playlist tags | Supported by most Xtream-compatible players |
| Movies & series (VOD) | Often mixed into one long list | Separate, organized sections |
| Player support | Almost every player, including VLC and Kodi | TiviMate, IPTV Smarters and most dedicated IPTV apps |
| Security | Password is visible inside the URL | Password entered in a login field |
Which One for Your Device?
| Device / player | Use | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Firestick, Android TV, Google TV (TiviMate, IPTV Smarters) | Xtream Codes | Firestick · Google TV |
| iPhone, iPad, Apple TV (IPTV Smarters, GSE Smart) | Xtream Codes | iPhone · Apple TV |
| Samsung / LG smart TV apps | Whichever the app asks for; many accept both | Samsung · LG |
| VLC (any device), Kodi PVR IPTV Simple Client | M3U | VLC · Kodi |
| Xbox (MyIPTV Player) | M3U | Xbox |
| MAG boxes | Neither: MAG uses a portal URL | MAG box |
Keep Your Login Safe
- Treat the M3U link like a password. Anyone with the link can use your account and may get it blocked for too many connections. Do not post it in forums or screenshots.
- Do not paste your login into unknown websites or "playlist checkers". Only enter it in the player app on your own device.
- Change it if it leaks. Ask your provider to reset the password; the old M3U link stops working at the same time.
- Stick to your connection limit. Each plan allows a set number of devices at once; using more causes errors (see IPTV error codes).
Frequently Asked Questions
For most people, yes: it loads faster and fills in the TV guide and catch-up automatically. M3U is better only when your player does not support Xtream Codes, such as VLC or Kodi’s PVR IPTV Simple Client.
Usually yes. Most providers build the M3U link from the same server, username and password (get.php?username=...&password=...&type=m3u_plus). Ask your provider for the exact link.
No. They are two ways to log in to the same account, so the channel list is the same.
Large playlists download in full on every refresh. Switch to Xtream Codes if your player supports it, or reduce the refresh frequency in the player settings.
