How to Set Up IPTV on Google TV & Chromecast
For Chromecast with Google TV, the Google TV Streamer and TVs running Google TV (Sony, TCL, Hisense and others).
The quick answer: Chromecast with Google TV and every Google TV device run Android TV, so IPTV works the same way as on an Android TV box. First search Google Play for your player (TiviMate and VLC are usually listed). If your player is not in the store, turn on developer options, allow the Downloader app to install unknown apps and install the player from its developer’s official link. Then add your M3U URL or Xtream Codes login. Expect about 10 minutes from start to first channel.
Which Install Route Fits Your Device?
Google TV devices differ in storage and ports, and that changes the best setup. Use this table before you start:
| Device | Storage | Wired internet | Best install route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromecast with Google TV (4K or HD) | 8 GB | Only with a USB-C Ethernet adapter | Google Play first; sideload only if needed. Keep one player installed to save space. |
| Google TV Streamer (2024) | 32 GB | Built-in Ethernet port | Google Play or sideload; plug in Ethernet for 4K channels. |
| Smart TVs with Google TV (Sony, TCL, Hisense…) | Varies by model | Usually a built-in Ethernet port | Google Play first. Sideloading steps are the same as below. |
Google stopped selling Chromecast with Google TV after launching the Google TV Streamer in 2024, but existing Chromecasts keep receiving app updates and work fine for IPTV.
Method 1: Install from Google Play (Easiest)
- Step 1 — Open Search. On the Google TV home screen, select Search and type the player name, for example TiviMate or VLC.
- Step 2 — Install. Open the app page and select Install. If the app does not appear, it is not published for your region or device; use Method 2.
- Step 3 — Open the player and add your login. Choose Xtream Codes (recommended) or M3U playlist. See M3U vs Xtream Codes if you are unsure which one to use.
- Step 4 — Load the TV guide. Most players load the EPG automatically with Xtream Codes. With an M3U link, add the EPG URL your provider gives you (EPG setup guide).
Method 2: Sideload with Downloader
Only install apps from the developer’s official website or link. Modified or "cracked" APKs from unknown sites are a common source of malware on TV devices.
- Step 1 — Turn on developer options. Go to Settings → System → About, scroll to Android TV OS build and press OK on it seven times until you see "You are now a developer".
- Step 2 — Install Downloader. Search Google Play for Downloader (by AFTVnews) and install it.
- Step 3 — Allow Downloader to install apps. Go to Settings → Apps → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources and switch Downloader on. Leave every other app off.
- Step 4 — Download the player. Open Downloader, type the official download address from the player’s developer and install the APK when prompted.
- Step 5 — Clean up. Delete the APK file when Downloader asks. On an 8 GB Chromecast this frees space you need for the TV guide cache.
- Step 6 — Add your playlist. Open the player and enter your Xtream Codes login or M3U link, exactly as in Method 1.
Get Smooth Playback on Google TV
- Use a wired connection for 4K. The Google TV Streamer and most Google TV TVs have Ethernet. On a Chromecast with Google TV, Google’s Ethernet power adapter (or any USB-C hub with Ethernet and power pass-through) removes most Wi-Fi drops.
- On Wi-Fi, use 5 GHz. Keep the device close to the router and avoid 2.4 GHz for HD and 4K channels. See how to fix IPTV buffering.
- Free up storage. Go to Settings → System → Storage, clear the cache of apps you do not use and uninstall unused apps. A full disk causes freezing and slow EPG loading.
- Turn off match frame rate if channels stutter. In Settings → Display & Sound → Advanced display settings, try switching "Match content frame rate" off and on; some live channels play smoother one way or the other.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Install blocked" or app not installing | Downloader is not allowed to install apps | Settings → Apps → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources → Downloader on |
| Developer options missing | Build number not tapped seven times | Settings → System → About → press OK on Android TV OS build seven times |
| Channels load but no TV guide | EPG URL missing or still loading | Use Xtream Codes, or add the EPG URL and refresh (EPG guide) |
| "Authorization failed" | Typo in username, password or server URL | Re-enter the login; check IPTV error codes |
| Buffering on HD/4K channels | Weak Wi-Fi or full storage | Ethernet adapter, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, clear cache (freezing fixes) |

Yes. It runs Android TV, so you can install IPTV players such as TiviMate from Google Play or sideload them with the Downloader app, then add an M3U link or Xtream Codes login.
You can, if your phone player supports casting, but the phone must stay on and the TV guide will not show on the TV. Installing the player directly on Google TV gives a better experience.
TiviMate is published on Google Play for Android TV devices. If it does not appear on your device, use the developer’s official download link with Downloader.
Chromecast with Google TV has 8 GB of storage and large TV guides use a lot of it. Keep one IPTV player installed, delete APK files after installing and clear the cache of unused apps.
